Sunday Star Updates

Principal's Message for the Week of May 19th

The 8th-grade recognition will be on Tuesday, May 28 at 9:00 AM. If you haven’t already done so, RSVP by Wednesday, May 22 to ensure that we have plenty of refreshments.

Field day will be on Wednesday, May 29. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for physical activity - hats, sunscreen, water bottles, tennis shoes, etc. We will have a bounce house for students to play in. Parents must fill out the WAIVER for their child to participate. PTA is still looking for volunteers. If you are available to volunteer, please sign up here. Those volunteering all day will be provided lunch.

Students will be taking their iReady diagnostic testing on Monday and Tuesday. These are the last tests for the year!! Please make sure your child has a charged Chromebook at school each day to complete their testing. To end the testing season, we are going to celebrate with hot dogs and chips outside on Friday afternoon!! Students are welcome to bring old blankets and towels to sit on outside if they would like. Thank you all so much for supporting us and your children during testing season.

4th and 5th grade students will be having a glow dance on Thursday, May 23 during 9th period as their reward for completing all of their OSTs!! Congratulations to all of these students for their hard work during testing.

This week is Spirit Week. We want to end our last full week of school with a good time!

6th-grade health parents/guardians,
6th-grade health is starting the Human Growth and Development Unit in class, on Monday the 20th. If you wish for your student to NOT participate in this unit, please have them turn in the opt-out form Monday morning before class or email Ms. Montgomery. These have been emailed to your email and are posted on your student’s Google Classroom. Remember this is to NOT participate in Human Growth and Development. Contact Ms. Montgomery if you have any questions or concerns.

The Miller South Steelband and Jazz Band will be having their annual Cabaret Night this year on Wednesday, May 22nd at 6:00 pm at Summit Artspace in downtown Akron. Come check it out and support these incredible musicians!

Miller South Jazz Band Auditions are on Thursday, May 24th. Students are to please sign up for a timeslot. This is open to students who will be in grades 6-8 on woodwind, brass, percussion, or rhythm section instruments. See Mrs. Hughes or the E-Mail blast for more information and to sign up.

Auditions for next year's Show Choir and Chamber Choir are happening after school this week on Monday and Tuesday, May 20th and 21st! All singing auditions for Chamber and Show Choir will happen after school on Monday from 3:30 pm-5:30 pm. Then, dance auditions for Show Choir will happen after school on Tuesday from 3:30 pm-4:30 pm. If your child signed up for auditions, families should have received an email with a link to an audition permission form and further information. Please fill that out if you have not already done so. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Stewart.

Students will be turning in their Chromebooks and Yondr bags during the last week of school. We will begin collecting Chromebooks on Tuesday, May 28 for grades 4, 5, and 6. We will collect grades 7 and 8 on Wednesday, May 29. We will collect all Yondr bags on Wednesday, May 29 during 1st period.

It's that time of year again when your child must turn in or pay for all lost library books. If your child receives a pink slip this means they will not be able to participate in end-of-the-year activities until their library account is squared away. If they fail to turn in books or pay for them, their school accounts will be charged and this will follow them through high school.

5th-grade students will be performing their harmonica performance on Tuesday, May 21 at 8:00 during morning meeting.

Students in grades 6-8 will have Summer reading. Please see the link in the all-call email for information.

Congratulations to Miller South alumni Elena Varner Waltz for being the recipient of the Julienne Hogarth Scholarship!

Please see the calendar in the email for events taking place this week. Only 8 more days of school so also check in on your child’s home access center. I hope you all had a great weekend and we’ll see everyone back tomorrow.
