Sunday Star Updates

Principal's Message for the Week of April 7th

I hope everyone had a safe, fun, and relaxing spring break whether you vacationed or stay-cationed. Just a few updates as we return this week to start our journey through the last 37 days of school.

Effective immediately, Akron Public Schools requires all parents who volunteer to chaperone a field trip to have a current background check. As we have many field trips upcoming that many families have volunteered to chaperone, I wanted to share this information and how to obtain a background check. Background checks can be obtained Monday through Friday from 8-12 and 1-4. The fee is $48 and the process takes about 15 minutes. Use the link attached to schedule an appointment. For additional information and questions call 330-761-2961.

Mrs. Hughes is seeking students who are interested in the Miller South Jazz Band for the 2024-2025 school year. Students who will be in 6th-8th grade and play a woodwind, brass, percussion, bass, guitar, or piano instrument please complete the Google Form to express your interest for the preliminary planning of the jazz band auditions at the end of May.

The Visual Art Department invites you to two of our favorite events: The Spring Art Show for students and families will be on May 4th from 1-4 PM at Akrona Galleries. This free, open house-style event showcases multiple pieces of art from each student in our program. Please continue to check our Art Booster Facebook Page for more information as the date approaches.

The Miller South Masquerade: Night at the Gallery annual fundraiser and auction will be held the night before. This adult-only event is a way for parents and community members to view the big art show the night before. Tickets are $25 until April 15th, then $30 afterward. The first 25 people to buy tickets will receive an upcycled photo frame at the event, created by students. Auction items are being added daily and you can purchase tickets here.

Applications for NJHS are due by April 23rd. Any 6th, 7th, or 8th grader interested in applying must pick up the application outside of Mrs. Dourm’s room.

Please see the calendar of events in the all call email for events taking place this week. Enjoy one more day off tomorrow and the eclipse and we will see everyone back to school on Tuesday!
