Welcome to "Mission Control," the 4th & 5th grade Gifted and Talented program at Miller South VPA!

This marks my 13th year working in urban education!  I went to Memphis, TN in 2008 as a Teach For America Corps member and then taught there for seven years in Memphis City Schools.  Four years ago, I returned to Ohio to be closer to family and was the Technology Integration Coach at Westpark Community Schools (K-8) before becoming the Gifted Intervention Specialist at King CLC.   I was thrilled when I received the opportunity to bring “Mission Control” here to Miller South! I’m excited for what this year has in store!

Mission Control Theme:

This year, 4th & 5th grade Gifted & Talented classes will continue to operate within the framework of a Mission Control (NASA/Space X) theme as we must BE THE CHANGE, to make the future better than the past.*“We can’t think of anything more exciting than going out there and being among the stars,” after all, WE ARE STARS!  We will relate missions, tasks, collaboration, communication, responsibilities, and roles from NASA/Space X’s Mission Control to how we work during our time together.  Beyond this, in the spirit of NASA/SpaceX astronauts and staff, we will focus on productive struggle and understanding successful failures.

This is the theme for our classroom collaboration and organization, NOT content.  We will still do some space related tasks and projects during the course of the year, but we will also explore a variety of content in the form of aligned enrichment and extension activities (going “deeper” and “further” with the Ohio state content standards and National Gifted standards)
